Andrej Kuruc arrived in Bratislava as a student who had never met an LGBT person before. He called the helpline from the phone at the dormitory reception desk. A few years later, he co-founded a theater and organized Rainbow Pride.
In this interview, he talks about the first Pride event in 2010—where smoke bombs were thrown at them and the police had to separate the neo-Nazis—about his burnout after the family referendum, and about why he stayed. As a psychologist, playwright, and activist. And about the moments when people came up to him after a performance and said they finally saw themselves reflected in it.
A series of interviews captures the experience of five personalities who have significantly shaped modern queer activism in Slovakia since 2008. They talk about the beginnings, turning points, burnout, loss of security, social hatred, but also about solidarity, hope and the need to continue.
