Christián Havlíček is a psychologist and a transgender man who spent years building something that was virtually nonexistent in Slovakia—a safe space for transgender and nonbinary people.
He talks about the early days, when doctors booed at conferences, the media ignored his credentials, and the healthcare system was set up to cause harm. Then came a turning point. After years of work, compromises, and a multi-year process, professional guidelines were issued to eliminate the practice of forced surgeries. A new government came into power and repealed them with the stroke of a pen. In this interview, he talks about the limit he has reached—and where he stands despite it all.
A series of interviews captures the experience of five personalities who have significantly shaped modern queer activism in Slovakia since 2008. They talk about the beginnings, turning points, burnout, loss of security, social hatred, but also about solidarity, hope and the need to continue.
